Is your dating profile full of selfies? Think there’s nothing wrong with this? Then think again! Here’s 7 reasons why you need to stop overusing selfies on your dating profile, and how it’s actually hindering you far more than you might realise.
See, selfies are a popular photo choice on dating apps because they’re easy to take, more comfortable to take in most cases, and allow you to get your “best angle.”
You can also take as many as you want until you get that “perfect picture” so they often end up being a firm favourite for singles.
But when a profile is made up SOLELY of selfies, it will actually do more damage than good…
What Selfies Are We Talking About?
Now just to be clear, we’re talking about a standard selfie – where it’s just a picture of you, taken by you, usually in the same mirror, or with very little background…
It’s just you, in the centre of the camera.
These classic selfies are the ones we’re referring to, which -all too often – dominate dating profiles.

7 Reasons Why You Need To Stop Overusing Selfies On Your Dating Profile
So let’s jump in to why they’re so damaging and why you need to (seriously!) stop using them on your dating profile…
1) It Lacks Personality
Having a dating profile that is made up solely of selfies – ultimately – DOES NOT DO YOU JUSTICE!
It doesn’t get across your interests, it doesn’t show you in different environments, nothing about it jumps out at a person who is scrolling through.
It doesn’t show who you are or what you’re about at all.
Instead, it makes your profile purely about your physical appearance. For this reason…

2) It Can Come Across as Vain or Shallow
Now of course, we doubt this is actually the case. You’re only selecting selfies as they’re the photos you’re more comfortable with, right?
But you have to consider how it might be perceived by a stranger who doesn’t know you at all.
They may jump to conclusion that you WANT to make this all about your looks, which can come across as vain or shallow.
3) It Can Even Suggest Insecurity
Now we all know that, the constant need to take and post selfies, especially when it becomes excessive, can be seen as a sign of seeking external validation and attention.
Studies have literally proven this, with Instagrammers who post lots of selfies are judged as less likeable and more insecure.
For this reason, a profile dominated by selfies can also be interpreted as a sign of insecurity, which is certainly less attractive to potential matches. Similarly…

4) It’s Like You Don’t Think Who You Are as a Person Is Enough
I know some of these reasons may be pretty hard to read. Know that this isn’t a personal attack against you. I’m simply trying to help and make you see – there’s so much more to you than your selfies!
See, the truth is, when all you show is selfies on your dating profile, you’re relying on your looks and your looks alone, to try to attract someone.
You’re not secure enough to show different aspects of yourself, that better reflect who you are as a person (and know that you’re more than worthy enough.)
Instead, you think your looks are the most important factor. You think if you can’t attract someone through that, no one will want you.
But that’s why you should remind yourself of your own personal wants and needs in a partner and who you should REALLY be looking to attract.
5) You’re Missing Opportunities
Having a variety of interesting photos on your dating profile is one of the simplest things you can do to make your dating profile stand out.
You don’t have long, or are able to provide much, to try to capture someone’s attention when they’re swiping through.
So if you are sticking solely to selfies – you’re really missing out on an opportunity to better showcase who you are as a person, and make a person stop swiping in order to home in on YOU!

6) You Don’t Seem as Friendly
When looking to improve your dating profile, you want to select a mix of pictures that are natural, genuine, and make you look approachable.
You want to send off the RIGHT signals, and selfies just don’t allow you to do this as easily.
7) It’s Boring!
Ultimately, when you scroll through a dating profile that’s made up solely of selfies, let’s be fair – it’s pretty boring. Especially if they’re all taken in the same bedroom mirror.
Where’s the hobbies? How about the interests? Where’s the little snippets into your life?!
The photos end up looking pretty much the same. It’s pretty monotonous and will be hindering you rather than helping you – no matter how good you might look in the snaps.

How Many Selfies Can I Show On My Dating Profile?
So how many selfies is too many selfies on dating apps?
Well, there’s no set rule, but if a dating app (like Hinge or Bumble) only allows up to 6 photos, you only really want a couple of selfies on there.
Aim for 2, with 3 as the absolute max…
And the selfies that you do select – try to make them a mix, in different mirrors, giving off different vibes, so they’re still each offering value in different ways.

What Selfies Are Better?
When it comes to the “better” range of selfies on dating apps, you’d be looking at doing different selfie poses, that show different aspects of your personality.
Or have different selfies, taken in different places…
So for example you might have: a selfie taken on a selfie stick whilst traveling, a selfie taken on an action camera whilst kayaking, a selfie in a hotel mirror – relaxed, being playful, posing.
This is a smart way to use selfies on your dating profile, as they’re still photos that are easy to take and more comfortable for you to take, but they’re different, varied and “working harder for you.”
That’s All For This One Then
Does that all make sense? Feel sufficiently convinced? Great stuff!
Then that rounds up, in a nutshell – the 7 key reasons why you need to stop overusing selfies on your dating profile, plus what you can do instead.
Remember, the best time to work on yourself is when you’re single.
So if you do struggle from low self esteem or a lack of self worth – create a singles personal development plan that will get you doing the things you need to really build it up properly.
Don’t let things like this hold you back.
You are bold, you are brave, you are wonderful, beautiful and so, so, worthy.
Don’t be shy to show who you are, and focus on trying to get that across more than simply trying to look good.
Wishing you all the very best.
